In clinical studies, it is common to have Phase 1-3 as part of the path of drug development. The methodology used by OSU scientist George Bailey has introduced a Phase 0, that uses ultra sensitive technology in concert with microdoses of (in this study carcinogens) to safely evaluate the impact on the human body. This new approach may stimulate additional types of research using this new methodology.
The study published in Cancer Prevention Research focused on the ability of chlorophyll and chlorophyllin to reduce absorption of aflatoxin in humans, and the methodology has captured scientists’ attention as well.
Phase 0 has not until now been included in clinical trial phases. However, this new methodology may provide a new model within the clinical trial format and allow for even more robust review.
